S.O.S.

Someone help me, please. I have 10 lbs left to lose, and want to lose it before winter starts (because we all know no one really loses weight in the winter, right?). I was doing pretty well, and I was doing another competition with my in-laws. But then something ruined the competition for me, and I lost motivation. Then we went on our trip, and I've just kind of lost my way...I need to get back on track asap, or I'm afraid soon it won't be 10lbs I've got left to lose but more like 20lbs. Anyone interested in a competition, or any other ideas that may help me get going again? I'm interested in anything from threats to anecdotes to joining me in losing weight to generous offers if I lose those 10 lbs etc. Not wanted: advice on what I should be doing!

Hmmm. Do you have ONE special event that you really want to look your best for?! Like, say, a Christmas party..? Maybe if you set a specific date, it'll help?

Good luck!

And btw, I'm sure you know this, but I'll say it anyway: weight lost over a long period of time, say one year, is much more likely to stay off, because it reflects a real change in lifestyle, and prevents the jo-jo effect. So if it doesn't work right away, don't give up. It's the weight loss in the long-term that counts anyway.

Huh, special event...not really. I wouldn't mind not looking like 32 on my 32nd birthday in December, but other than that.

You're definitely right about the slow weight loss being better. And what I really liked about things so far was that I was on a steady loss with a good change in eating habits. But, I think our trip to Oregon/Washington really threw me off. It doesn't help when you try to eat cheap and can't prepare anything in a kitchen.

I just need to get motivated again to keep doing all the good things I've been doing. My goal at the beginning of the year was to get to my target weight (170 lbs) by the end of the year. I'm 9 lbs away, but realize I'd rather get there before December.

What do you usually drink? I'm sure you don't drink lots of junky soda or anything like that but personally, I drink quite a bit of milk. If I've gotten off track with my eating habits or want to speed things up a bit I'll go on a water only to drink rule. Since I usually drink at least 2 cups of milk a day (and we use whole milk here) I can cut 300 calories easily without feeling like I'm eating less.

Also, I'm assuming your are still nursing. I never completely wean until my kids turn 2 but many people wean much sooner so I'm not sure. Anyway, not to spoil your plan but I never am completely back to my prepregnancy weight until after I stop nursing. I usually hold on to the last 5 lbs. But then it seems to drop off pretty quickly once the weaning is complete.

If you are determined to loose your weight by the end of the year, weaning would probably help (but I wouldn't really recommend it). Maybe allow yourself an extra 5 pounds until you are done nursing.

Thanks Reni. I usually don't drink anything but water...very very rarely I may drink some milk, but that's really like once every 3 months or something.

I'm assuming that weaning will help. I'm actually kind of in the process of weaning. I haven't completely quit nursing, but I have cut out two of the 5 nursing sessions and replaced them with sippy cups and formula for right now. Once I run out of the formula I got for free, I'll probably switch to milk, since she'll be 13-14 months by then. I may have completely weaned her by then. I don't know...I think she's ready to switch, and I feel like I'm ready to be done. We'll see how it goes. I'm not going to force her off my breast, but I think I'm also willing to let her try other things if she's happy with that.

Hmmm.. I don't think weaning will help? I was at my skinniest when I breastfed just because it burned so many calories.

Something my mom does to get back on track: one day of eating only apples and drinking water. Second day eating only liquids. It gets rid of excess water in your body.

And my mom swears it helps her get motivated every time. Because a) you lose a few pounds right away and b)it's a drastic change to get you out of your current routine and into a new one.

Anyway, good luck. You can do it and all that jazz.

I think a drastic change is always a good 'wake-up'. I think I just found something that may work. I'll sign up for a half-marathon. It's in 6 weeks. I think that'll be enough time to prepare and shed some pounds, but also a great motivation to really shape up since it's fairly close. I've never ran a half-marathon before. The closest was a 10k. We'll see how that goes.

As for nursing. I think we had that discussion before. Some women seem to hold on to the last few pounds until they're done nursing, and some just keep shedding. It makes sense to me. Your body needs calories to make milk (which is why you burn fat to begin with), but some bodies may hold on to some fat to keep making milk while others don't, just like some bodies naturally shed fat easily while others don't. Metabolisms are really different, and I'm sure they play a big role in how you lose weight when nursing.

I'm sure nursing has helped in my weight loss, but I also wouldn't be surprised if my body held on to some fat while nursing.

At any rate, my nursing decisions will be independent from my weight loss goals, and independent of the opinions of others. My mom thinks I'm weird for still nursing (and I'd suspect some other family members as well), and I'm sure Isa thinks I should keep going, and Reni already suggested she more or less keeps going till 2 years, and I think, I've nursed for one year now, and if Sophia is ok with a change, then I'm ok with a change. If not, it's fine. I'm not desparate to quit nursing, but I'm also not desperate to keep going. :)
